WELCOME TO THE SOMMELIERS ASSOCIATION OF INDIA

Our vision for the Sommeliers Association of India is to create a vibrant and inclusive community of wine enthusiasts and professionals dedicated to elevating the standards of wine and other beverage service along with education. We aim to foster a culture that celebrates the rich diversity of wines, both domestic and international, cultivate a new generation of sommeliers, and promote responsible and informed consumption.

In February 2024, the only national association for sommeliers was invited to the Annual General Assembly and the celebrations of the 55th anniversary of the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI). The 3-day session saw multiple events take place, including a black-tie gala dinner abounding with exceptional food and wine. But of greatest importance to the organisation was the admission of new applicant members into their fold. SAI had been voted unanimously to be inducted into the ASI’s College of Applicants.

The establishment of the Sommeliers Association of India envisions contributing to India's growth and recognition as a hub for wine appreciation and expertise. We are committed to creating a dynamic and supportive community that encourages learning, collaboration, and a deep passion for the world of wines. A key initiative of SAI will be organizing and managing the sommeliers competition in India, culminating in the Best Sommelier of India Competition, with winners advancing to the Best Sommelier of Asia & Pacific and Best Sommelier of the World Competitions.

India, with its vibrant culture and rich history, is on a new journey into the world of aromas, flavors, and the art of wine appreciation. The country’s wine production history spans thousands of years, with archaeological findings showing that ancient Indians were cultivating grapes as early as 7000 BC, alongside rice and barley. Today, India dedicates thousands of acres to grape cultivation, significantly contributing to the economy with some of the world’s renowned wines. The Sommeliers Association of India aims to be the guiding light for sommeliers, enthusiasts, and the entire Indian alcohol and beverage ecosystem, supporting the continued growth and appreciation of this rich tradition.
